Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Cheeses of Edam & Beemster

Farm Visit and Cheese-Making Workshop Discover Holland’s love affair with cheese and make your own during a workshop at a working farm. Your journey will take you through the Beemster region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and The Netherlands’ first polder—a tract of land reclaimed from a body of water and surrounded by dikes. Stop at a family-run farm in Middenbeemster, where you will enjoy a cup of coffee or tea before beginning your cheese-making workshop. Learn the basics during this hands-on demonstration; at the workshop’s conclusion, you will be given a small cheese to take with you. En route to the farm, visit the charming town of Edam—world famous since the 17th century for its namesake cheese. At the Kaaswaag, or cheese weighing house, peruse its museum on Dutch cheese production, sample several cheeses and see the old-fashioned scales used by merchants to weigh cheeses brought to the market. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
