Best Viking Excursions in Amsterdam for Couples

Amsterdam is one of Viking’s busiest river ports, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Many couples expect a full day of guided tours there, then find that on their itinerary Amsterdam is mostly where they board the ship or leave it.

So the first step is to figure out which kind of Amsterdam day you have. After that, choosing is easy, and you and your partner can make the most of what’s often your first (or last) evening in Europe together.

A quick note: Viking says shore excursions “vary by itinerary and are subject to change.” The options below come from Viking’s current Rhine Getaway, Grand European Tour and Tulips & Windmills itinerary pages. Check your own sailing in My Viking Journey. The activity levels below are our estimates; check the rating Viking gives each tour before you book.

Which Amsterdam Day Do You Have?

  • Rhine Getaway or Grand European Tour, starting in Amsterdam: Day 1 is embarkation day. Viking currently lists one optional excursion, the Amsterdam Evening Canal Cruise.
  • Rhine Getaway or Grand European Tour, ending in Amsterdam: The final day is for disembarking, and Viking’s pages don’t list Amsterdam excursions for it.
  • Tulips & Windmills (Amsterdam round trip, a spring sailing): This is the itinerary with real Amsterdam touring time, including the included Amsterdam Canal Cruise and a full-day Keukenhof Gardens visit near the end.

If you want more time in the city on a Rhine sailing, Viking offers Amsterdam and Amsterdam Premium hotel extensions on some itineraries.

Embarkation Day: Amsterdam Evening Canal Cruise (Easy, Our Estimate)

Viking describes this as a way to “discover Amsterdam during the evening via one of the city’s famous glass-top canal boats.”

Why couples like it: After a long flight, it’s about the gentlest way to see the city. You sit together, the boat does the work, and the canal houses glow in the evening light. If jet lag is hitting one of you harder, this is an easy compromise.

Getting around on your own: One travel writer on a Rhine Getaway noted that Viking docked behind Amsterdam Centraal Station, about a 15 to 20 minute walk to Damrak and many central sights. Docking spots can change, so check your daily program.

Tulips & Windmills: The Included Tour

Amsterdam Canal Cruise (Easy, Our Estimate)

On Tulips & Windmills, the included tour is the Amsterdam Canal Cruise, which Viking calls the “most leisurely” way to discover the city, aboard its glass-topped canal boats. One guest wrote that the tour pointed out some of the city’s famous row houses and architecture, and recommended it especially for first-time visitors.

Optional Amsterdam Excursions on Tulips & Windmills

Amsterdam’s Golden Age (Moderate, Our Estimate)

Viking says you’ll “peruse the work of the Dutch Masters, cruise Amsterdam’s charming waterways and visit a patrician museum.” It’s a fuller, art-focused day.

Best for: The partner who wants Rembrandt-era Amsterdam, not just a boat ride past it. Expect lots of standing in galleries.

Delft Walking Tour & Porcelain Ware (Moderate, Our Estimate)

This one leaves the city. You’ll “visit a Delftware factory to see how its iconic porcelain is made before setting off on a walk through the city” of Delft.

Best for: Couples who’d like a smaller, quieter Dutch town and a souvenir with a story.

Private Excursion: Half-Day Amsterdam / Full-Day Amsterdam (Varies)

Viking lists both a Private Excursion: Half-Day Amsterdam and a Private Excursion: Full-Day Amsterdam, where you “create your own itinerary” with your own private guide.

Best for: Couples with very specific interests, or one partner with mobility needs who wants to set the pace. The activity level depends on what you plan.

Keukenhof Gardens (Included) and Keukenhof Gardens & Historic Haarlem

Near the end of the cruise, Viking lists an included Keukenhof Gardens visit to walk “the flower-lined footpaths of one of the most renowned flower gardens in the world.” There’s also an optional Keukenhof Gardens & Historic Haarlem, which adds the streets of nearby Haarlem.

One guest said the gardens get crowded, and suggested walking the outdoor beds first and saving the indoor pavilions for later in the day. She also noted that Keukenhof is open only for about eight weeks each spring. That’s why this excursion appears on spring sailings.

Activity level (our estimate): Easy to moderate. The paths are flat, but the grounds are large.

Tips for Couples with Different Interests

  • Jet-lagged + raring to go: On embarkation day, one of you naps while the other walks the canal ring. Meet up for the Amsterdam Evening Canal Cruise.
  • Art lover + small-town lover: On Tulips & Windmills, one partner does Amsterdam’s Golden Age while the other heads to Delft on Delft Walking Tour & Porcelain Ware. You’ll both have plenty to talk about at dinner.
  • Garden lover + city lover: The included Keukenhof Gardens works for nearly everyone. If one of you would rather see more of the town, Keukenhof Gardens & Historic Haarlem adds Haarlem to the day.
  • Very different wish lists: A Private Excursion lets you combine both lists in one day, with a guide handling the logistics.
  • Think about your extension: If you’re starting a Rhine cruise in Amsterdam and you both want real time in the city, an Amsterdam hotel extension may help more than any single excursion.

Whatever you choose, plan ahead. Viking opens shore excursion booking in My Viking Journey months before you sail; check your booking for the exact date, and plan together before it opens. Spring sailings are popular.

Making the Decision Together with PortPlanner

Amsterdam decisions often come down to timing. Evening canal cruise, or an early night? Golden Age or Delft? Haarlem or just the gardens? It’s easy for one partner to book quickly while the other is still deciding.

PortPlanner gives each of you your own space to rate the excursions at every port, then compares your picks side by side, so neither of you is guessing. You’ll still book in Viking’s My Viking Journey, which doesn’t have a way for couples to compare picks. PortPlanner fills that gap.

FAQ: Viking Amsterdam Excursions

Is there an included Viking excursion in Amsterdam? It depends on your itinerary. On Tulips & Windmills, the Amsterdam Canal Cruise and Keukenhof Gardens are included. On current Rhine Getaway and Grand European Tour pages, the only Amsterdam option listed is the optional Amsterdam Evening Canal Cruise on embarkation day.

Can we see Keukenhof on any Viking cruise? Keukenhof is open only in spring, so it appears on spring itineraries like Tulips & Windmills. Check your sailing’s day-by-day listing.

What’s the most relaxing Amsterdam excursion? The canal cruises, day or evening. You’re seated the whole time and the views come to you.

Should we add an Amsterdam extension? If your Rhine cruise starts or ends in Amsterdam and you both want to explore, an extension gives you time that your cruise days don’t. Viking lists Amsterdam and Amsterdam Premium options on some itineraries.

Can we do different excursions on the same day? Yes. Book what suits each of you and compare notes over dinner on board.
