Best Viking Excursions in Vienna for Couples
Vienna is the day many Viking guests circle first on a Danube cruise: Habsburg palaces, coffeehouses and more classical music than you could hear in a lifetime. It also has one of the longest excursion lists on the river, which is great news until you and your partner sit down to choose.
One of you wants palaces and dancing horses. The other wants to get out of town on an e-bike, then end the day with a glass of local wine. In Vienna you can have both, because many of the best options run in the evening. Here’s how the current lineup breaks down, and how couples can split the day without missing the good parts.
A quick note: Viking says shore excursions “vary by itinerary and are subject to change.” The options below come from Viking’s current Danube Waltz and Grand European Tour itinerary pages. Your sailing may differ, so check your own cruise in My Viking Journey. The activity levels below are our own estimates. Viking gives each tour its own rating in My Viking Journey, so check that before you book.
How Much Time You Get in Vienna
This depends on your itinerary. On the Danube Waltz, Vienna gets one full day. One guest wrote that their ship was docked “from early morning until nearly midnight,” which leaves room for a daytime tour and an evening outing. On the Grand European Tour, Vienna spans two days. Viking lists the evening concerts on the first day and the full slate of tours on the second.
The Included Tour: Panoramic Vienna
Viking describes Panoramic Vienna as a look at “the magnificent architectural highlights” of the city, and it’s included on current itineraries.
What it involves: One guest described a coach ride along the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard lined with palaces, museums and the State Opera, followed by a walk ending at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. They put it at about three and a half hours, with the afternoon free.
Activity level (our estimate): Easy to moderate. You’ll sit on the coach for part of it, then walk through the old center.
Why couples like it: It’s an easy morning together that shows you the whole city. After that, you can each pick an afternoon.
Optional Viking Vienna Excursions Worth Considering
These are optional (extra-cost) tours. Not every one runs on every sailing.
Schönbrunn Palace (Easy to Moderate, Our Estimate)
Viking calls this a tour of “the home of the Habsburg dynasty, built to rival the sprawling Château de Versailles.” Some sailings also list Small Group Experience: Schönbrunn Palace, the same idea with a smaller group.
Best for: The partner who wants imperial Vienna: state rooms, royal history, formal gardens. Palace tours mean a lot of standing and slow walking indoors.
Behind the Scenes at the Lipizzaner Stallions (Easy, Our Estimate)
Viking says you’ll “step backstage at the elegant Spanish Riding School,” home of the famous white Lipizzaner horses.
Best for: Animal lovers and anyone who loves a behind-the-curtain tour.
Behind the Scenes at the Vienna Boys’ Choir (Easy, Our Estimate)
Viking describes a tour of the boarding school of the Vienna Boys’ Choir (the Wiener Sängerknaben), where you “meet some of the singers.”
Best for: Music lovers and anyone interested in Vienna’s living traditions rather than its monuments.
Vienna’s Countryside by E-Bike (Active, Our Estimate)
Viking says you’ll “explore nature along the Danube River and pedal at ease” by e-bike. The motor helps, but you still need to be comfortable on a bike.
Best for: The partner who’s had enough of cathedrals and wants fresh air.
Viennese Waltz & Mozart (Moderate, Our Estimate)
You’ll “learn the steps of the Viennese waltz and visit Mozart’s Vienna apartment,” Viking says. Viking’s own waltz video was filmed at Tanzschule Elmayer, a well-known Vienna dance school, but the excursion venue isn’t named on the itinerary page, so don’t count on it.
Best for: Couples. It’s hard to think of a more romantic shore excursion, and it works even if neither of you can dance.
Evening Options: Concerts and Wine
Vienna’s evening lineup is a big reason couples love it:
- Mozart & Strauss Concert: Viking says “the classical music never stops in Vienna.” One guest reported that their concert featured the Vienna Residence Orchestra and called it possibly the most popular optional tour in Vienna.
- Alma Deutscher Plays Mozart & Strauss: Viking calls this a “privileged access performance” led by the young composer and performer. It’s offered only on certain dates (Viking points guests to almadeutscher.com/viking-dates), so check whether your sailing qualifies.
- Heurigen Dinner: A Heurige is a wine tavern that serves the new season’s wine. One guest described carafes of wine on the table, small plates of cheese, meat and bread, and musicians who soon had the room singing along. Their winery had been in the same family since 1609. Their tip was to expect to come back to the ship “slightly tipsy.”
Tips for Couples with Different Interests
Vienna’s long day and evening options make splitting up easy:
- Cyclist + palace lover: One of you takes Vienna’s Countryside by E-Bike while the other tours Schönbrunn Palace. Meet back on board and head out together for the Heurigen Dinner.
- Horse lover + music lover: Split for Behind the Scenes at the Lipizzaner Stallions and Behind the Scenes at the Vienna Boys’ Choir, then share a concert in the evening.
- Both want romance: Do Panoramic Vienna together in the morning and book Viennese Waltz & Mozart for the afternoon. You’ll have a story you tell for years.
- One wants a quiet day: One partner takes the included tour and spends the afternoon in a coffeehouse. The other packs in an optional tour. Then you meet for the Mozart & Strauss Concert.
The evening tours are where couples most often double-book themselves. Vienna has several, but you can realistically do just one per night. Choose early. Viking opens shore excursion booking in My Viking Journey months before you sail; check your booking for the exact date, and plan together before it opens. Small-group and limited-capacity tours can fill up.
Making the Decision Together with PortPlanner
Vienna is where couples’ wish lists get long. Concert or Heurigen? Lipizzaners or Schönbrunn?
PortPlanner lets each of you rate Vienna’s excursions on your own, without the other person’s opinion in your ear, then compare picks side by side. You’ll see at a glance where you agree, where you differ, and which tour one of you really cares about. Booking still happens in Viking’s My Viking Journey, but it doesn’t have a way for couples to compare picks. PortPlanner fills that gap.
You can browse one cruise free, and PortPlanner Pro is $3.99/month and covers both travelers. Plan your Vienna day together at portplanner.io before your booking window opens.
FAQ: Viking Vienna Excursions
What’s the free Viking excursion in Vienna? On current Danube Waltz and Grand European Tour itineraries, Panoramic Vienna is the included tour. The others are optional and cost extra.
Can we do a daytime tour and an evening excursion in Vienna? Usually, yes. Concerts and the Heurigen Dinner run in the evening, so they can fit after a daytime tour. Check your schedule in My Viking Journey to confirm times don’t overlap.
Which Vienna excursion is best for a couple? Viennese Waltz & Mozart is built for two. For a relaxed evening together, the Heurigen Dinner or the Mozart & Strauss Concert are easy wins.
Is the e-bike tour hard? We rate it active. The e-bike does much of the work, but you should be confident riding a bike. Check Viking’s activity rating for the tour in My Viking Journey.
Do Vienna excursions differ by itinerary? Yes. The Grand European Tour splits Vienna across two days, and some tours, like the Alma Deutscher performance, run only on certain dates.
