Best Viking Excursions in Prague for Couples

Prague has no Viking dock. The city sits on the Vltava, not on the Danube or the Rhine, so your Viking time in Prague is spent in a hotel, on land, before or after the river part of your trip. That surprises many couples, and it changes how you should plan.

The good news is that Prague is one of the most romantic cities in Europe, and Viking offers some of its most memorable excursions here. Here’s how Viking fits Prague into its itineraries, what’s on the excursion list, and how to divide it up when you and your partner want different things.

A quick note: Viking says shore excursions “vary by itinerary and are subject to change.” The options below come from Viking’s current Elegant Elbe, Cities of Light and Danube Waltz pages. Check your own trip in My Viking Journey. The activity levels below are our estimates; check the rating Viking gives each tour before you book.

How Viking Offers Prague

There are two main ways to get Prague on a Viking trip:

  1. As part of a cruisetour. Elegant Elbe (and the holiday version, Christmas Along the Elbe) begins with several days in Prague before you join the ship, and Cities of Light starts with two days in Prague before heading for Paris. These itineraries list Prague excursions day by day.
  2. As a hotel extension. The Danube Waltz and Grand European Tour offer Prague and Prague Premium pre- or post-cruise extensions. On the Danube Waltz extension, Viking describes a panoramic tour that includes “a guided walk through Prague Castle,” plus free time. On the final day, you transfer to your ship. Viking says additional excursions on extensions may be bookable in My Viking Journey once your cruise excursions open for sale.

If your Prague days come from an extension, the list you see may be shorter than the one below. Check your booking.

The Included Tour: Panoramic Prague

On Elegant Elbe and Cities of Light, Panoramic Prague is the included excursion. Viking calls the city “an incredible tapestry of remarkably preserved medieval brilliance.”

What it involves: One guest on a Viking Prague stay described a roughly four-hour tour that began by coach at Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. The group then walked across Charles Bridge into the Old Town in time to watch the Astronomical Clock strike noon.

Activity level (our estimate): Moderate. Prague is a city of hills and cobblestones, and the castle district sits high above the river.

Why couples like it: You get Prague’s two halves, the castle and the Old Town, in one morning. After that, you’ll know which parts you each want to see again.

Optional Viking Prague Excursions Worth Considering

Privileged Access: Lobkowicz Palace (Easy to Moderate, Our Estimate)

Viking describes this as a visit to “the stately residence of one of the region’s most avid patrons of the arts.” The palace sits within the Prague Castle grounds. In Viking’s own preview video, the highlights include Beethoven’s notes on the score of his Fifth Symphony, manuscripts by Mozart and Haydn, paintings by Canaletto and Bruegel the Elder, a private concert in the Baroque concert hall, and lunch in the family’s original living quarters.

Best for: Music and art lovers, and couples who want one standout splurge. If you two choose just one Prague excursion to share, many will pick this.

Jewish Prague (Moderate, Our Estimate)

Viking calls this “an enlightening walking tour” of the Josefov, Prague’s Jewish Quarter. It’s a moving morning in one of Europe’s most historically significant Jewish communities.

Best for: History lovers. Expect steady walking and some time standing at sites.

Prague by Night (Moderate, Our Estimate)

Viking says you’ll “experience the medieval treasures of Prague after dark during an illuminating walking tour.”

Best for: Couples who want Prague at its most atmospheric. Seeing the Old Town and its bridges lit up at night is a different experience from the daytime tour.

Prague Folklore Dinner (Easy, Our Estimate)

Viking promises “a fun-filled evening of food, dance and wine.” One guest on a Viking Prague extension described a bus ride into the countryside, a traditional dinner with unlimited beer and wine, a singer, and folk dancers who taught eager guests a few steps. The music came from violin, cello and dulcimer. “Everyone agreed this excursion was terrific,” she wrote.

Best for: Couples who’d enjoy a lively group evening, and anyone game to be pulled onto the dance floor.

Tips for Couples with Different Interests

Prague’s land-based schedule gives you more flexibility than a typical port day, because nobody is waiting for you to get back to the ship.

  • History buff + art lover: One partner does Jewish Prague in the morning while the other explores on their own. Then reunite for Privileged Access: Lobkowicz Palace, which has enough music, art and history for both of you.
  • Night owl + early riser: The early riser takes a slow morning walk over Charles Bridge before the crowds arrive. The night owl saves their energy for Prague by Night. Have dinner together in between.
  • Social + quiet: If one of you loves a group party and the other doesn’t, the Prague Folklore Dinner is a good night to split up. The quieter partner can try one of the Old Town’s small restaurants and you can swap stories later.
  • Pace yourselves: Prague’s hills and cobblestones tire you out faster than you’d expect. If one partner is less steady on their feet, choose the included Panoramic Prague for the coach support and skip a second walking tour that day.

Plan Prague before you book anything else. Your Prague days are at the start or end of the trip, so they’re easy to forget. Viking opens shore excursion booking in My Viking Journey months before you sail; check your booking for the exact date, and plan together before it opens. Specialty tours like Lobkowicz may have limited space.

Making the Decision Together with PortPlanner

On a Viking trip, Prague tends to be either the first stop or the last, which makes it easy to overlook while you’re focused on the cruise. Then, when your booking window opens, you’re juggling it along with every other port.

PortPlanner lets you both rate excursions port by port, then compare picks side by side, so Prague gets the same attention as every other stop. You’ll still book in Viking’s My Viking Journey, but it doesn’t have a way for couples to compare picks. PortPlanner fills that gap.

You can browse one cruise free, and PortPlanner Pro is $3.99/month for both travelers. Plan your Prague days together at portplanner.io.
