Best Viking Excursions in Passau for Couples
Passau is the small city that wins people over. It sits where three rivers meet (the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz), with pastel baroque streets in the middle and a hilltop fortress looking down on it all. Many guests arrive thinking of it as just the place where the Danube Waltz begins or ends, and leave wishing they’d had more time.
For couples, Passau raises a classic question: stay or go? The old town is compact and lovely, but some of Viking’s most popular Passau excursions leave it entirely, for Salzburg, the Bavarian countryside or the Inn River. Here’s how to sort it out.
A quick note: Viking says shore excursions “vary by itinerary and are subject to change,” and Passau is a good example. The list depends on whether you’re on the Danube Waltz (in either direction) or the Grand European Tour. Check your own sailing in My Viking Journey. The activity levels below are our estimates; check the rating Viking gives each tour before you book.
Your Passau Day Depends on Your Itinerary
- Danube Waltz, Passau to Budapest: You board in Passau on Day 1 and spend Day 2 there. Viking currently lists the included walking tour, Hike the Passau Hills and Salzburg Highlights & Dinner.
- Danube Waltz, Budapest to Passau: Passau is your last full day, with the longest menu: e-bikes, a farm visit, a historic train, a beer dinner and a Salzburg trip.
- Grand European Tour: Passau is a mid-cruise stop with a boat trip to Schärding among the options.
The Included Tour: Passau Walking Tour
On every itinerary listed here, the Passau Walking Tour is included. Viking invites you to “explore the Italianate-style streets of Passau, where three European rivers converge.”
What it involves: Expect the old town and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, famous for its enormous pipe organ. One guest on the Danube Waltz said their included tour came with tickets to the cathedral’s midday organ concert. They said the surround-sound effect made them feel “like we were listening to a film score rather than a church organ.” Whether a concert is part of your tour may vary, so check your daily program.
Activity level (our estimate): Easy to moderate. Mostly flat, with cobblestones.
Optional Viking Passau Excursions Worth Considering
Hike the Passau Hills (Active, Our Estimate)
Viking promises Passau’s “sublime setting at the confluence of three rivers from the best vantage points in the city.” One guest described it in detail. The hike starts at Mariahilf, above the Inn River, where pilgrims climb a covered stairway of 321 steps. It then crosses the river through the old town and climbs to Veste Oberhaus, the 13th-century fortress, for sweeping views. They put it at about three and a half hours and mentioned having time to rejoin the walking tour for the organ concert.
Best for: The partner who wants a workout and the best views of the day.
Salzburg Highlights / Salzburg Highlights & Dinner (Moderate, Long Day, Our Estimate)
Viking says you’ll “spend the day in picturesque Salzburg, setting of the beloved film The Sound of Music and the birthplace of Mozart.” On Passau-to-Budapest Danube Waltz sailings it’s listed as Salzburg Highlights & Dinner; on other itineraries it’s Salzburg Highlights.
Best for: Mozart fans, Sound of Music fans, and couples happy to trade Passau for a second city. Remember that Salzburg is a separate trip from Passau, so you’ll spend real time on the road.
Bavaria by E-Bike (Active, Our Estimate)
“Escape Passau as you pedal along the Inn River, enjoying unspoiled nature and pastoral landscapes,” Viking says. Listed on Budapest-to-Passau Danube Waltz sailings and on the Grand European Tour.
Best for: Outdoorsy partners who’d rather see Bavaria than another church.
Bavarian Cruise & Baroque Town of Schärding (Easy to Moderate, Our Estimate)
On the Grand European Tour, Viking lists a boat trip on the Inn River, with “the rolling hills of Upper Austria and Lower Bavaria” all around, plus a visit to baroque Schärding.
Best for: The partner who wants scenery without much effort.
Bavarian Farm & Countryside (Easy, Our Estimate)
Visit “the rural reaches of Bavaria and hear local farmers reveal some details of their working lives,” says Viking.
Best for: Curious travelers who enjoy meeting locals more than ticking off sights.
Historic Train & Bavarian Woods (Easy, Our Estimate)
Viking describes a journey “through the tranquil beauty of the enchanting Bavarian woods on board a historic private train.”
Best for: Train lovers and the partner who’d love a relaxing, seated half day.
German Beer Culture & Dinner (Easy, Our Estimate)
An evening of “Bavarian hospitality” with “beer tasting and regional cuisine.”
Best for: Couples who want a fun last night out. On Budapest-to-Passau sailings, it’s a fitting way to toast the end of the trip.
Tips for Couples with Different Interests
- Hiker + listener: One of you takes Hike the Passau Hills. The other takes the Passau Walking Tour and lingers in the cathedral. One guest reported the hike could link back up with the walking tour later in the morning, so you may end up together.
- Stay + go: If one of you wants Salzburg and the other wants Passau, split up. Passau is small and easy to explore alone, and the ship is close by. Then meet for the evening.
- Active + relaxed (in the countryside): Bavaria by E-Bike for one partner and Historic Train & Bavarian Woods for the other. You’ll both see the Bavarian countryside, at very different speeds.
- Last-night celebration: On Budapest-to-Passau sailings, book German Beer Culture & Dinner together whatever you each did during the day.
The Salzburg trip and the bike tours are the ones to plan carefully, since they take up a big part of your day. Viking opens shore excursion booking in My Viking Journey months before you sail; check your booking for the exact date, and plan together before it opens.
Making the Decision Together with PortPlanner
Passau’s question, “stay or go?”, is exactly where couples talk past each other. One partner quietly assumes Salzburg is happening. The other has been looking forward to the hilltop fortress.
PortPlanner lets each of you rate Passau’s excursions independently, then shows your picks side by side, so assumptions come out before anyone books. Booking still happens in Viking’s My Viking Journey, which doesn’t have a way for couples to compare picks. PortPlanner fills that gap.
You can browse one cruise free, and PortPlanner Pro is $3.99/month and covers both travelers. Sort out your Passau day at portplanner.io.
