Maritime Åland

Visit Museums and Learn About the City’s Seafaring Past Explore Mariehamn’s maritime heritage during a visit to historic sights and the Åland Maritime Museum. Drive past picturesque bays to Lemland and visit the medieval church. Hear about the features discovered during a renovation project during the 1950s; 12th-century wall paintings were unveiled that depict the life of St. Nicolas, considered to be the patron saint of seafarers. Continue to the Pellas Museum, the birthplace of Captain Sven Erikson, who was the last captain of the Herzogin Cecilie. After coffee and a pancake, see the Pommern, the only four-masted ship in the world that remains in its original condition. It was built in Scotland in 1903 to carry cargo between England’s shores and Australia. Explore the Åland Maritime Museum, and view salvaged features from the Herzogin Cecile, including the captain’s cabin, before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
