Medieval Óbidos

Discover the Beauty of a Hilltop Medieval Town Explore the romantic hilltop city of Óbidos, a delightful labyrinth of narrow warrens and whitewashed houses. Travel by motor coach to this enchanting city, a wedding gift to Isabel of Aragon from King Dinis following their marriage in 1282. Discover its fascinating history from your guide during a half-mile walk, then set out to explore its cobblestone streets more on your own. Take in the sight of its gleaming white buildings, balconies overflowing with bougainvillea and decorative tiles, and see the 14th-century castle, rebuilt after the defeat of the Moors in 1148. At the Church of Santa Maria, view the vibrant ceiling frescoes, elaborate hand-painted tiles and stately Renaissance columns. You may also stroll through the town’s Pillory Square or pause to sample authentic Portuguese cuisine at a local eatery, before returning to your coach and onward to your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
