The Appian Way

UNESCO-listed Tombs, Ruins and Ancient Aqueducts Walk a Roman Republic-era road to see subterranean tombs and visit ruins of ancient aqueducts in the countryside. Meet your guide and stroll along the Appian Way, ancient Rome’s earliest and most important road that connects Rome to the port of Brindisi, 430 miles to the south. Dating back to 312 BC, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its revolutionary construction that can still be seen today. Running underneath the route are more than 186 miles of catacombs built by early Christians to entomb thousands of poor people, popes and religious martyrs. Descend to explore a few of these tombs before continuing to see the ruins of a well-preserved mausoleum and an ancient stadium called the Circus of Maxentius. Have lunch before driving to Parco degli Acquedotti to see the remains of massive stone aqueducts, which once carried clean drinking water from the mountains in the east. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities. Activities by foot may contain difficult, unpaved surfaces and/or multiple stairs and steep inclines. Total time walking
