The Sights of Veere
A Historic Church & Traditional Pastry Enjoy privileged access to a historic church, where you will watch a baker prepare a local delicacy. Meet your guide and set off on foot to the Grote Kerk, or the Great Church. It was founded in 1342 and has held various roles, including that as a military hospital, a shelter for beggars and even as a cattle shed during World War II. Today, it is a celebrated venue for art and cultural events. You will watch as a baker prepares a bolus, a sticky pastry made of white bread dough that has been coated in a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon, rolled up and fried. Sample one of these treats before setting out to explore Veere. See buildings that date back to the 15th and 16th century and the Schotse Huizen, or “Scottish Houses,” named after the flourishing trade between Scotland and the Netherlands. Finish with a stroll around the marina to view the gilded houses. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
