Frankfurt, Germany

IG Farben Building & the Pentagon of Europe

Discover a Chapter of 20th-Century German History Visit a historic building which once hosted a company complicit in Nazi war crimes and a US Base post-World War II. Board your motor coach and drive to Johann Wolfgang Goethe University to explore the IG Farben Building. View its 1930s New Objectivity design and learn about its harrowing past as the former headquarters of IG Farben, a chemical company deeply implicated in Nazi crimes, including the use of forced labor and the production of Zyklon B. Continue to the Wollheim Memorial, named for a survivor of Auschwitz who fought for compensation for those forced to work for IG Farben. Pay your respects before stepping inside to learn how the building served as a United States base from 1945-1995, earning it the nickname the “Pentagon of Europe.” View the Eisenhower Rotunda and Auditorium to see how the building serves the university today before exploring more of the campus with your guide. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
