Bernkastel History & Wine
Stroll the Charming Streets of a Medieval Town Discover the beauty and history of one of the Moselle Valley’s most enchanting towns, Bernkastel-Kues. Begin your guided excursion on the Bernkastel side, exploring its cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses. Browse the medieval marketplace and its 1608 Renaissance Rathaus, or Town Hall, and admire the tiny narrow Spitzhäuschen, or “Pointed House,” built in 1416. See the castle ruins of Landshut, which was destroyed by a fire in 1692, and admire sweeping views of the steep valley vineyards that surround you. As you cross the river into Kues, learn about the history of the city’s most well-known resident, medieval cardinal and philosopher Nicolaus Cusanus. View the late Gothic hospital and electoral complex named after him, then visit its Vinothek for a tour of the 15th-century wine cellar and a wine tasting. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
