Mysteries of the Ancient Mound Builders
Archaeologist-Led Nature Walk to Enigmatic Earthworks Gain insight into three major North American Indigenous cultures during a visit to various ancient mounds. Embark on a drive by motor coach to Perrot State Park, set along a beautiful stretch of the Mississippi River and a witness to more than 13,000 years of human history. Here, the Effigy Mound, Hopewell and Mississippian cultures constructed burial mounds, effigy mounds and ceremonial platforms, the oldest dating back almost 2,000 years. Upon arrival, you will meet Jim Gallagher, a professor of archaeology at the University of Wisconsin, who will lead you on a guided, approximately half-mile nature walk over the uneven and sometimes hilly terrain. Learn the theories behind these ancient earthworks—their purpose remains a mystery to researchers to this day—and enjoy wildlife sightings and scenic views of Trempealeau Bay. After, you will return to your coach and your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
