Belogradchik Rocks & Magura Cave Winery
The Fortress and Wines of the Balkan Foothills Travel to the foothills of the Balkan Mountains and sample wine that has been aged in a limestone cave. Drive from Vidin to the Belogradchik Rocks, a collection of red-hued cliffs and massifs. Weathered by time, these rocks have been worn into strange shapes. At different angles, they are said to resemble myriad figures, from people and animals to palaces and towers. Here, visit the Belogradchik Fortress, an ancient stronghold built into the mountains, utilizing the rocks as natural fortifications. Have lunch before continuing to the Magura Winery, known for its sparkling wines. Explore its cave, where the wine is aged in ideal conditions; a steady temperature, humidity and darkness all combine to create a terroir which mirrors France’s Champagne region. Sample several of the wines produced here, paired with local snacks, before returning to Vidin. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
