Kolmanskop—Ghost Town of the Namib
Explore the Once Prosperous Diamond Town Set out to explore this crumbling ghost town, which is being slowly reclaimed by the desert. Once a wealthy diamond mining settlement, today the structures of Kolmanskop stand eerily quiet, abandoned since the depletion of the mines in the mid-1950s. Upon arrival, you will receive a map of the town and then set out independently to discover its derelict buildings. Take in the sight of the vast and lonely landscape and see how the desert is relentlessly reclaiming its territory. Some buildings have been partially restored, and an array of interesting artifacts can be seen in the old schoolroom, the dentist’s office and the pharmacy. Listen to the wind whistling through the empty windows and doorways and see the sand dunes encroaching into houses that once welcomed a vibrant community. After your visit, you will return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
