Ypres & Flanders Fields
Bruges (Zeebrugge), Belgium

Ypres & Flanders Fields

Monuments and Sites of the World War I Delve into the dramatic history of World War I on this visit to battle sites, cemeteries, museums and memorials. The city of Ypres contains numerous poignant sites and monuments linked to the war. Through the words of the poem by Canadian doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, it has come to symbolize the meaningless slaughter of the Great War. Stopping to visit Tyne Cot, one of the British cemeteries, you will see the Menin Gate, a famous British war memorial with the names of 54,896 missing soldiers engraved on its walls. At the In Flanders Fields Museum, enjoy free time to explore and discover the stories of ordinary people who endured the war. The innovative technology used within the museum earned it the title of Best European Museum. Following free time for lunch, you will visit the Essex Farm Cemetery—one of the well-known local sites associated with John McCrae. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
