Ancona On Foot
Ancient City of the Adriatic Sea Walk through history in Ancona, once an ancient Greek city, now capital of the coastal Marche Region. The Italian gateway to the Adriatic, Ancona became an independent maritime republic during the Middle Ages and today boasts a thriving seaport. Shaped like a horseshoe and perched on the rocky promontory of Mt. Conero, Ancona’s Old Town is a treasure trove of ancient sites. Its cathedral stands on the site of the former acropolis of a Greek city, with remains dating back to the third century BC. Begin your exploration at the Old Port, where you will see Roman monuments including the Arch of Trajan and the Arch of Clementinus, which frame the historic harbor. Continue your journey through the city center and learn about its past as you walk by intricate mosaics and landmarks such as Palazzo del Senato, Teatro delle Muse and Calamo Fountain. After, return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
