A Taste of Altamura
Bari, Italy

A Taste of Altamura

The Charming Hometown of Famous Bread Sample the famous Pane di Altamura bread, and discover the city for which it is named. Travel by motor coach to Altamura, located near the regional border with Basilicata. Here, with your local guide, stroll the streets of the historic town center, ensconced within ancient walls. Altamura is known for its traditional bread, which was granted PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status within Europe in 2003. By law, it must be produced according to a range of strict conditions, including using particular varieties of wheat, a certain specification of water, and a consistent production method. Visit the town’s oldest bakery, established in 1391, and learn about its history and the bread-making techniques that originated here. You will see the bakers at work and taste the famed Pane di Altamura for yourself, before returning to your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
