Black-legged Kittiwake: Tromsø’s Endangered Bird
Participate in a Citizen Science Project Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Tromsø and participate in the protection of the black-legged kittiwake. Meet a local ornithologist who will lead you on a walk through Tromsø’s city center to monitor this endangered species. Learn about a local initiative led by a Tromsø-based nonprofit organization, Rissa Citizen Science, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Survey breeding pairs, map their nests, or help rescue the fallen chicks. Stop to admire the famous “kittiwake hotels,” alternative breeding sites designed to promote coexistence between the city’s residents and this red-listed seabird. Contribute key information to help scientists, building owners and the municipality find solutions to protect this endangered species in Tromsø. As a part of your tour, Viking will make a donation to support Rissa Citizen Science and its project. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
