Knitting Traditions of Western Norway

Explore the History of Norwegian Textiles Gain insight into Norway’s knitting heritage during a visit to a Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum. Board your motor coach for a scenic drive through the countryside to Salhus, a pretty coastal town. At the Norwegian Knitting Museum, housed in a restored 19th-century factory, learn about traditional production processes, from carding and spinning to winding and sewing, and handle examples of knitted pieces that were made here. Hear stories of past workers and see the historic machines in action. After your tour, enjoy free time to browse the on-site shop in which you may purchase knitting patterns, wool and handcrafted garments. Rejoin your coach and return to Bergen, stopping to visit the city’s largest bunad boutique. Learn about this time-intensive craft that combines tailoring, embroidery and cultural knowledge, to create these exceptional heirlooms. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
