Avignon & Palace of the Popes

A Masterpiece of Gothic Architecture Journey to Avignon to call at the Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched atop Dome Rock. Set out on a drive by motor coach for this charming Provençal town, which served as the papal seat of the Roman Catholic Church from 1309 to 1377. Today, Avignon is a town of art and culture best known for its famous Pont d’Avignon, the medieval bridge spanning the Rhône River. Inside the well-preserved fortified city walls, explore the immense Palais des Papes—covering over two and a half acres in a maze of galleries, chambers, chapels and passages, it is the largest Gothic palace in the world. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 in recognition of its architectural and historical importance. After your visit, you will enjoy a guided walk of the town, followed by lunch in a local restaurant and a stroll through Avignon’s beautiful streets. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
