Iceland’s Pristine Panorama

Scenic Journey to the Vatnajökull National Park Enjoy an overview of East Iceland’s landscapes and learn about its geology at the Snæfellsstofa Visitor Center. Meet your guide at the pier and embark on a scenic drive over the impressive Fjarðarheiði mountain pass. Continue past Lagarfljót, Iceland’s third-largest lake, formed by glaciers millennia ago, and learn about its mythical creature, Lagarfljót Wyrm. Statues and figurines of the venom-spitting beast can be found across the town. At the Snæfellsstofa Visitor Center on the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vatnajökull National Park, step inside to see an interactive display of the history and geology of the region. You will also take a short walk to Skriðuklaustur, the former home of one of Iceland’s revered writers, Gunnar Gunnarsson. Cap your excursion with a stop in Egilsstaðir, the largest town of East Iceland, before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
