Archaeology, History & Heritage Walk

Discover the Fascinating Finds of East Iceland Explore Seyðisfjörður’s history during visits to an archaeological site and the Technical Museum of East Iceland. Meet your guide at the pier and set off on foot to Fjörður. In 2021, four burial mounds were discovered during excavation works, as well as a longhouse dating back to as early as 950 A.D, with artifacts from the Viking Age. Hear about the interesting finds uncovered, including an intact whalebone stool discovered frozen in time from 1,000 years ago. Afterward, head to a local bistro where you will enjoy artisanal refreshments and live music before continuing to the Technical Museum of East Iceland. Here, you will explore the history of the nearby village of Búðareyri and learn about Iceland’s technological advancements and impact on society over the past 150 years. Enjoy the exhibition at your own pace and either return to the ship with your guide, or later at your leisure. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
