Hesteyri by Boat
Visit a Remote Uninhabited Village Set sail for Hesteryi, once a thriving fishing village in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Meet your skipper and crew, board your vessel and after a short safety briefing, head out into the fjord. Up until the late 1940s, 80 residents lived here without electricity, telecommunications, or established infrastructure. By 1952, all inhabitants had left in search of a new life on the mainland, leaving behind a beautiful wilderness where time has stood still for decades. Enjoy a walking tour of the village and see the restored buildings that now serve as guest houses, allowing visitors to experience this remote part of Iceland. Enjoy refreshments at the Old Doctor’s house, before returning to your boat and sailing back to Ísafjördur and your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
