A Taste of Svalbard
Longyearbyen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands

A Taste of Svalbard

Enjoy Local Cuisine and Sample Arctic Brews Explore Longyearbyen on foot, savor a taste of Arctic cuisine and visit a local brewery. Head to the center of the town, where you will begin your walking excursion around Longyearbyen. Your guide will point out the town’s main attractions and regale you with stories of its history. Founded by American businessman John Longyear as a mining town, the capital city of the Svalbard archipelago is now home to approximately 1,800 residents. Stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant and enjoy a two-course meal, accompanied by a glass of beer or wine. Next, you will head to the world’s northernmost craft brewery and enjoy a tasting of Arctic brews. You will also learn about how the beer is made, using 2,000-year-old glacial water from Bogerbreen in Svalbard. Afterward, return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
