Fossil Hunting
Geology of the Svalbard Archipelago Set out into the rugged landscape outside the town of Longyearbyen in search of fossil remains. The archipelago of Svalbard is marked by deep fjords and dotted with jagged mountain peaks. Today, the interior is covered in massive, thick glaciers, but 60 million years ago there were large river deltas and rich vegetation in the area surrounding Longyearbyen. This is why large amounts of fossil vegetation dating as far back as the Precambrian Era can be found hidden among the rocks and ice. Embark on a scenic drive to the Nybyen area, located in the Longyearbyen Valley. From here, you will follow your knowledgeable guide into the stark wilderness, hiking up the moraine from the Longyearbyen Glacier. Gain insight into how fossils are created and learn some general geologic information about the archipelago. Please note: Fossil sightings cannot be guaranteed. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
