Historic Winchester & Its Glorious Cathedral

Walk Through Royal History, Ancient Legend and a Cathedral for the Ages Explore the beautiful, historic city of Winchester and visit the magnificent cathedral. Embark on a scenic drive to Winchester and set off on foot to explore. This ancient city was once the heart of Alfred the Great’s Kingdom of Wessex, and the original home of William the Conqueror’s great Domesday Book. Your guide will lead you on a tour of the cathedral, which traces its origins to the 7th century. The Romanesque structure, built in 1079, is considered to be one of the world’s great buildings. Step outside and walk through Cathedral Close and pass some of the city’s iconic landmarks, including Winchester College as well as the house where one of England’s literary giants, Jane Austen, spent her final days. See the banks of the Itchen River and pause to view the striking statue of King Alfred the Great before boarding your motor coach back to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
