Homes of the Ancient Roman Elite

Visit the Ancient Roman Homes and Monuments of Ephesus Delve more deeply into Ephesus, combining an overview of key sites with exploration of its impressive Roman houses. At its height, Ephesus was home to more than 250,000 people, but only Roman citizens were allowed to live in the city center. You will join a local guide for a visit to the remarkably preserved homes of successful merchants and prominent city leaders. Because the houses’ remains have been protected from the elements by a roof, their walls are still adorned with fine colorful mosaics and frescoes. Constructed on terraces, they are testament to the highly developed building skills and techniques of the Romans. See the underground heating system and the private courtyards of the wealthy. At the end of the tour, you will have free time to browse the craft stalls outside the ancient city’s gates. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
