Tangier, Morocco

Historic American Legation

Explore United States–Morocco Relations at the Former Consulate Experience Moroccan culture and learn about the long history between the United States and Morocco. Take a guided tour to a produce market before stepping into the medina to explore the Grand Socco, or “Big Square.” Then, visit the American Legation, first presented to the US in 1821 and its diplomatic post in Morocco until 1956. After decades of neglect, it was refurbished and reopened as a museum in 1976. A US National Historic Landmark since 1982, the Moorish-style complex is now a cultural center, museum and research center. Tour its elegant state rooms or lush courtyard while learning about how Morocco was one of the first countries to formally recognize the nascent US in 1777, which culminated in the Moroccan-American Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786—the longest unbroken treaty in US history. Afterward, enjoy free time to shop before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
