Great Greenland Furhouse
Qaqortoq, Greenland

Great Greenland Furhouse

The History and Production of Greenland's Prized Fur See firsthand how Greenland’s prized fur is made during a tour of the inside workings of a furhouse. The fur trade, though illegal in some countries, is big business in Greenland, and the Great Greenland Furhouse is one of the country’s biggest employers. You will meet your guide at our pier and walk together to the facility. During your tour, you will learn about the history, production, processing, distribution and valuation of Greenland fur and sealskins. View skins of polar bear, seal, caribou, reindeer, musk ox and lamb. Continue past the cleaning area to the sorting room, where workers determine the quality of skins and sort them into different piles. In the workroom, watch as seamstresses sew beautiful coats, jackets, mittens, slippers and other items from quality sealskin, a crucial part of the colorful national costume. After this fascinating tour, return to your ship by foot. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
