Longyearbyen’s Heritage on Foot

Walk a Historic Mining Trail Set out on a fascinating hike along the Burmaveien road and learn about Longyearbyen’s origins. Drive to the Global Seed Vault, where you will begin your walk, and hear about its mission. As one of the most unique places on Svalbard, it houses various plant species and plays a crucial role in the world of science and conservation. Along the car-free Burmaveien road, your guide will point out Arctic flora which makes a brief appearance here in the summer, and you will view the unique coal transportation system as you hear about its style of operation; it functioned by transporting suspended buckets from overhead lines down to the harbor. You will follow its towers, passing the Taubanesentralen—the central station that remained in operation until the 1980s. After passing through Skjæringen district, you may return to your ship with your guide or head back independently. Please note: guests should dress appropriately for the weather, with windproof outerwear, warm layers, gloves and headwear. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
