Penguins at Sunset

A Close-Up Experience with the World’s Smallest Penguins Witness the little blue penguin in its natural habitat during a sunset visit to a nature reserve. Embark on a scenic drive to the Takiharuru nature reserve, home to the largest breeding colony of little blue penguins on the Otago Peninsula. Also known by their Māori name, kororā , these penguins are the smallest species in the world and recognizable by their small stature and slate-blue plumage. Upon arrival, your guide will share insights with you about the penguins and the work that the reserve is carrying out to protect the land and enhance wildlife diversity in the area. Then, as dusk falls, settle in to watch the little blue penguins return from their day at sea and make their way to their cliff-face burrows for the night. If you are lucky, you may also spot seals and sea lions lounging on the beach, as well as seabirds flying overhead, before returning to your ship. Please note: wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
