The Taieri Gorge Railway
Ride the Rails Through Scenic Otago Take in the views of New Zealand’s rugged countryside during a railway journey through the Otago region. Board your train beside your ship at Port Chalmers and set out on a rail journey into Otago’s interior. Travel along the coastline and through Dunedin, passing the Dunedin Railway Station, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings. Continue inland through the Taieri Plains, then ascend into the Taieri Gorge, where you will pass by steep rock faces, forested slopes and high viaducts. Cross the Wingatui Viaduct and see the famed Notches, a sequence of bridges carved directly into the cliffside. Continue through tunnels and along the winding river to Pukerangi, where you will begin your return journey. Back in Dunedin, enjoy free time to explore the railway station. After, you may choose to rejoin the train back to Port Chalmers, or return via shuttle at your leisure. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
