Longyearbyen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands

A Day in the Life of a Miner

Journey through Svalbard’s Rich Mining History Learn about the region’s rich coal mining heritage and experience life as a miner. In 1906, Longyearbyen—the world’s most northerly village—was established as a settlement to support the thriving coal mining industry in the region. Today, you will witness firsthand the traditional methods that were used to extract black gold from the mountain for more than 100 years. Meet your guide and embark on a scenic drive to Gruve 3, or Mine 3. Upon arrival, you will don your headlamp before heading down into the mine. In the depths of the mountain, feel the cold, humid air and experience the pitch-black conditions that the miners spent their working lives in as you listen to the echoes of the mountain. With the press of a switch on your headlamp, the bean of light will lead you through the tunnel and back to base. After your insightful tour, return to your ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
