Mahé Past & Present

Discover History, Culture and Sample Local Rum Explore fascinating cultural and historic sites of the Seychelles’ capital, then indulge in a taste of local rum. Travel to Victoria to visit the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market where locals have sold their spices, produce and handmade garments, as well as an array of freshly caught fish, since 1840. After, head to Morne Seychellois National Park and the Mission Ruins of Venn’s Town, where the remains of several buildings from a 19th-century settlement sit on a tropical forest mountaintop. Stop for lunch en route to a Creole village of authentic and reconstructed homesteads called Domaine de Val des Près. Here, you will discover authentic pottery, paintings, clothing and other handcrafts from the Seychelles. Cap your excursion with a visit to the Trois Frères Distillery, located on the grounds of a historic spice plantation, for a taste of the country’s renowned Takamaka brand rum. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
