Monreale Cathedral
Splendid Norman-Style Cathedral and Cloister View one of the finest examples of Norman architecture during a visit to the Cathedral of Monreale. Meet your guide and embark on a scenic drive through Palermo to Monreale. The town was little more than sparsely populated countryside when King William II of Sicily ordered the building of a cathedral in 1172. The charming exterior and twin towers display a fusion of architectural styles and the opulent interior is a stunning array of Norman, Arabic and Byzantine artistry, with mosaics that depict religious stories from the Old and New Testaments that have been expertly crafted. Seven thousand square feet of golden mosaics cover the upper sections of the walls, including a magnificent figure of Christ Pantocrator in the central apse. You will also take a stroll to admire the Benedictine Cloister and its beautiful columns. After your tour, return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
