Tilbury Fort
London (Tilbury), England

Tilbury Fort

Visit One of London’s Great Defenses Journey to Tilbury Fort to discover its role in the defense of London for over 400 years. Nestled on the north bank of the River Thames, this historic artillery fort has defended London against seaward attacks for centuries. Originally constructed in the final years of the reign of King Henry VIII, it underwent several reinforcements during the following years. Today, it is England’s best-surviving example of a bastioned fortress and retains its complete circuit of moats and outworks. Accompanied by your guide, drive by motor coach to reach the fort to learn about its history and strategic importance. Explore its magazine houses, where gunpowder was stored, and the Victorian magazine tunnels, where you can get a sense of what it was like for the gunners who worked the ramparts. After, you will have time on your own to investigate further, then rejoin your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
