Sakurajima Volcano & Arimura Lava Observatory
Panoramic Views of Active Volcano From Afar Explore stunning Sakurajima, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Sakurajima was once an island across the bay from Kagoshima, but the extensive lava flow from an eruption in 1914 connected it to the mainland. The volcano still continues to erupt, routinely sending plumes of ash and rock into the atmosphere. Drive by motor coach to the ferry terminal to transfer to the island, where you will call at the visitor’s center to learn more about Sakurajima. You will also make a brief stop at nearby Yogan Nagisa Park, where you may soak your feet in its natural hot spring. Continue to the Arimura Lava Observatory, built on a small hill created by an eruption in 1946. See the volcano smoking from afar at a scenic viewpoint and enjoy the calm of Kinko Bay while walking along the promenade. After, you will make the return journey to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
