The “Hells of Beppu”
Fascinating Hot Springs Sights Discover Beppu’s “Boiling Pools of Hell” as you explore some of the city’s famed hot springs. Beppu is Japan’s leading hot springs resort and boasts an array of pools for bathing and viewing. Embark on a scenic drive and see several of its most celebrated “Jigoku Meguri.” These eight springs are said to resemble a scene from hell, with their boiling temperatures, murky waters and steaming pools. Stop at Onishiibozu Jigoku, steaming mud pools that bubble from the depths and resemble the shaven heads of monks as they emerge. The site is a designated Natural Monument of Oita Prefecture. Next, see the Umi Jigoku and marvel at its boiling turquoise waters and enchanting, otherworldly aura. The high amounts of iron sulphate are the reason for its vibrant color, and it is a sight to behold. After time for photos, return to your motor coach and journey back to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
