Coral Conservation Experience & Reef Snorkeling
Hear About Restoration Efforts and See Them Up-Close Learn about the conservation of Roatán’s coral reefs during visits to a science institute and marine park. Begin at the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences, where you will listen to a presentation introducing the importance of the reefs and the challenges that they face—discover why reefs are declining worldwide and learn about coral nurseries, micro-fragmentation and more. Continue to the Coral Restoration Center at the Roatán Marine Park to learn more about coral spawning and how controlled conditions like those in labs like this are assisting with restoration efforts. Observe micro-fragmentation in action in the wet lab and get involved as you attach small pieces of coral to ceramic tiles or reef plugs, which will be placed in nurseries to grow. Cap your day with time to snorkel at a nearby restoration site, where you can see conservation efforts in action. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
