Yucatán (Progreso), Mexico

Hammock Weaving & the Museo de la Gastronomía Yucateca

An Ancient Craft and Regional Flavors Try your hand at creating your own hammock during an immersive workshop and discover Yucatecan cuisine. First introduced to the region around the 15th century, hammock weaving has become a treasured cultural tradition in the Yucatán—deeply rooted in Maya heritage, this intricate craft has been passed down through generations and retains its importance today. Guided by a master artisan, learn the secrets behind the weaving process. Settle in at a wooden loom, where you will work with premium nylon threads as you practice the precise knots and patterns that give these hammocks their strength and beauty. After completing your hammock, continue to the Museo de la Gastronomía Yucateca, where traditional dishes reveal how history and local ingredients define the cuisine of the Yucatán Peninsula. Sample authentic local flavors and dishes, then return to your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
