Rose Island Lighthouse Voyage
Newport, Rhode Island, United States

Rose Island Lighthouse Voyage

Victorian-Style Beacon and Remains of a Revolutionary War Fort Cruise into Narragansett Bay and learn about Newport’s colonial heritage during a visit to Rose Island. A strategic military outpost during the Revolutionary War, the island is now an important wildlife sanctuary and stopover for many migratory birds. Board your vessel and set out into the bay, admiring views of the city and the Claiborne Pell Bridge along the way. Upon arrival at Rose Island, take a guided walk around the remnants of Fort Hamilton. It’s construction began during the Revolutionary War to defend Newport but it was never completed; only its troop barracks were built and remain intact. Continue to the wooden Victorian-style lighthouse to learn about the lives of the lighthouse keepers who maintained this navigational aid for a century until its deactivation. Explore the museum and keeper’s living quarters of the lighthouse before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
