Chatham’s Historic Dockyard

Britain’s Naval Past Learn about maritime history during a visit to a 400-year-old Royal Naval base. Travel by motor coach to Chatham Historic Dockyard, where you will meet your guide and set out to uncover Britain’s maritime past. With roots stretching back to the mid-16th century, the dockyard is one of the most significant maritime heritage sites in the UK. Climb aboard the historic warships that are permanently moored here to hear stories about life at sea and wartime missions from your guide, and discover the RNLI Lifeboat Collection, an exhibit showcasing decades of maritime rescue history. At the Ropery, a Grade I Georgian and Victorian rope factory that still operates today, you will learn about the rope-making techniques that were essential to the naval operations here. After lunch, you will have time to explore independently before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
