Greenock on Foot

History and Heritage Set out on foot to discover the industrial heritage and artistic legacy of Greenock. Begin at the Watt Institution, an important learning hub in Greenock dedicated to the industries and experiences that have helped shape modern Scotland. Explore its exhibits and learn about its namesake, James Watt, a key figure in the Industrial Revolution and inventor of the steam engine. Continue to the Mermaid Mural —painted in 2022 by international street artist Smug, it adorns the side of a tenement building and stands tall over the town center. Visit the historic quarter and stroll along William Street, birthplace of Watt and where he spent much of his early life, and Cathcart Square, home to a series of carvings celebrating Greenock’s heritage. At the end of your excursion, take in the views of the River Clyde as you walk back to your awaiting ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities. Activities by foot may contain difficult, unpaved surfaces and/or multiple stairs and steep inclines. Total time walking or standing may exceed 3 hours.
