Irish Culture & Traditions
Donegal Wool, Bread-Making and an Irish Wake Experience Discover ancient Irish customs and traditions during an enlightening visit to the town of Ardara in County Donegal. Drive to Ardara, home to John Molloy Woollen Mills, where you will discover firsthand the craftsmanship of hand knitting and tweed weaving that has been passed down through the generations. Continue to a local bar for a demonstration of Irish bread-making and to savor a sample of the final product. Afterward, you will be treated to a reenactment of a traditional Irish wake experience. A prominent feature of Irish funeral traditions, at a wake it is customary to celebrate the life that has just passed with a party with plenty of food, drink and music. After taking part in local customs including the “sniffing of the snuff” and “tasting of the poitín,” enjoy some free time in Ardara before boarding your coach for the return journey to your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
