Portland, England

Abbotsbury Swannery & Subtropical Gardens

Exotic Flora and Native Fauna Stroll through one of the greatest collections of Mediterranean plants in the UK and learn about Mute Swans. Drive by motor coach to the spectacular Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, established during the mid-18th-century by the Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. Today, the gardens consist of 20 acres, showcasing an array of rare and exotic plants from all over the world. Upon arrival, meet your guide and set out to explore. Soak up the lush surroundings as you wander along the charming walled garden trails and admire the world-famous camellia groves. Pass by fragrant rhododendrons and beautiful hydrangeas before continuing to Abbotsbury Swannery, home to the only managed colony of mute swans in the world. Learn about these elegant creatures and see the shallow brackish waters where they nest each year, before returning to your awaiting ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
