The Heritage of Surabaya

Indonesian History and Culture Discover the hidden history of this bustling Indonesian city, known as the “City of Heroes.” Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, gained its moniker following the Battle of Surabaya in 1945. Visit Tugu Pahlawan, or the Heroes Monument—a 130-foot-tall, decorated, inverted spike—and the monument’s museum to learn the history of the battle and the Indonesian National Revolution. The monument was officially opened to the public in 1952, and soon became the symbol of Surabaya. After a brief stop at the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, continue to the Majapahit Heritage Hotel. Explore the beautifully restored colonial building with your guide, admiring its elegant architecture and learning about its historical significance. After, enjoy a selection of traditional Indonesian and international dishes before returning to you ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
