Ancient Trowulan

An Archaeological Journey Awaits Travel to Trowulan, the ancient capital of Majapahit, to discover East Java’s most exciting archaeological site. The Hindhu Majapahit Empire reigned from the 13th to the 16th century, and many of its temples are around Trowulan. Most of the buildings—made from a reddish brick—collapsed over time, but some structures partially survived. They have been reconstructed to produce a complex with diverse areas such as Pendopo Agung—an open air pavilion believed to be the Grand Hall of Majapahit Palace. The most interesting of the ruins include the gateway of Bajang Ratu Temple with its strikingly sculpted Kāla heads, and the Tikus Temple, or Rat Temple, which was used for ritual bathing and cleansing. Look inside the Trowulan Museum, an archaeological museum that houses superb examples of Majapahit sculpture and pottery. Following your visit, you may enjoy lunch before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
