Discover Māori Life, Land and Legacy Embark on a journey of discovery where you will learn about Māori legends and history. Board your motor coach for a scenic drive to Otatara Pa Historic Reserve. Settle in for a storytelling session with your Māori guide. Uncover rich layers of Māori history as you hear about Pania of the Reef, a sea maiden who fell in love with a mortal, and Te Mata Peak, named for a legendary giant who is said to have tried to bite through the mountain to prove his love to his wife. Then, head to a local marae to explore its sacred site and learn about the historic battlefield of Ōmarunui, where Pai Mārire supporters fought with kūpapa Māori and government forces for control of the land. You will also see Ngā Pou o Heretaunga in Civic Square, a series of carved pou representing ancestors from local marae, before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
