As you are led along the trail, take in the sights and smells of the pine forest. Approach the complex, which dates back to the 9th-century Sailendra Dynasty and is an excellent example of the early classic style of Javanese architecture. At 4,000 feet above sea level, the temples provide breathtaking views across north-central Java. The main temple is dedicated to Shiva, with statues of Nandishwara and Mahākāla, the Hindu gods and guardians of the gate.
