Battleship Island

Coal-Mining History and Visit to an Abandoned Island Discover the fascinating history of Hashima Island during a visit to this now uninhabited site. Viewed from afar, the densely packed buildings and seawall of this abandoned island resemble a Japanese battleship, earning it the nickname Gunkanjima, or “Battleship Island.” Begin with a visit to the Gunkanjima Digital Museum for an introduction to this historic site, known for its undersea coal mines, then board a ferry to the island to see what remains of its towering concrete structures. Before its abandonment in 1974, this 16-acre island had the highest population density in the world and represented Japan’s rapid industrialization during the late 19th century. Today, nature has reclaimed much of the island, but many of the buildings still stand; its eerie atmosphere has been used as a set piece in several films, including Skyfall . After your visit, return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
